<p>SAN RAFAEL, Calif., March 9, 2010 &#8211; Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) announced   <br />Autodesk 3ds Max 2011 software &#8211; the latest version of its modeling,    <br />animation, rendering and compositing application. A new node-based material    <br />editor, innovative hardware renderer and full-featured compositor are new    <br />features offered in the 2011 release to help accelerate the creation of    <br />compelling imagery and entertainment content.</p>
<p>&quot;Our first priority with 3ds Max 2011 was to make artists more productive    <br />in common everyday workflows,&quot; said Stig Gruman, Autodesk vice president of    <br />digital entertainment. &quot;We have re-architected core parts of the software,    <br />introduced a much requested node based material editor streamlining    <br />workflows and added new features, like the painting tools and the    <br />Quicksilver hardware renderer, to help customers meet or beat their    <br />deadlines without compromising either creativity or quality.&quot;</p>

<p>The idea for the creation of this animation came to me from a Motorola ad in which an apartment transforms into a cell phone. Any attempts to find detailed information about the production of the movie ended at best with a link to a SIDEFX webpage.</p>
<p>The pipeline for this tutorial (Maya (modeling) -&gt; Max (cutting) -&gt; Maya (animating) -&gt; Max (rendering)) may seem a bit strange. This can be accomplished without using 3ds Max, if you do R&amp;D, but for the purposes of this project, we will use everyday tools. There is a nice plugin called Deconstructor, which does what we need for this project, but it was created for use with 3ds Max only. In the process of working with Deconstructor, some problems were discovered. Before starting the cutting process, you need to use a modifier shell, otherwise some parts of the cut geometry will have &#8220;inappropriate internal&#8221; walls&#8221;</p>

<p>This tutorial is targeted at those with an intermediate level of modeling and texturing experience and it&#8217;s meant to be a &#8220;making of&#8221;. Not being a step by step tutorial, this will resume itself to presenting the pipeline typically employed at AMC Studio when creating a building or another type of next gen game asset. Even this pipeline is not a fixed one, but depends on the specific requirements of each individual project so this tutorial details an &#8220;average&#8221; pipeline composed of all the techniques our team used in the past.</p>

<p>In this tutorial we will learn about Unwrap UVW modifier and pelt mapping. We will not only explore simple mapping like Planar or Cylindrical, but also the more elaborate technique called Pelt Mapping. This technique seamlessly wraps texture around the object.</p>
<p>Firstly, we will look at the Planar. Cylindrical and Spherical mapping so create a sphere, a box and a cylinder in max. Select box. Press alt+q to isolate the selection and apply Unwrap UVW Modifier. Expand the modifier stack and select face from the list. From Selection Parameters uncheck the Ignore Backfacing and select all the faces of the box. Apply box mapping and than click on best align. From the parameters rollout click on the edit button. A new editor window will open up.</p>

<p>Open up lady01.max. We will use composite material type for this purpose as it layers complex materials and maps. It is made up of other maps. For this kind of map use images that contains an alpha channel. For composite map display driver must be OpenGL or Direct3D. The composite map uses opacity to determine that how the different material overlay the base material. We would use opacity map to give our selection different colors.</p>
